my next solo show with peter marcelle opens on thursday, may 15. there will not be an opening but on sunday, may 18th, i will be in the gallery all day - so please drop-in and say hello if you are free! here is the press release for the show (and thank you for the support of me and my work) -

Peter Marcelle Project is pleased to present Artificer, the recent work of Edward Holland, in its new space in Southampton, NY. With this latest body of work, Holland has focused on his own language as a painter and exploited it. Loosely based on the narrative structure of James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, the series touches on his history as a painter through the collection and application of gestures, ephemera, color, texture and, in each piece, the recreation of a childhood drawing. Not beholden to the book, beyond a titular reference for each work, these paintings and works on paper are not illustrative. Rather they serve as individual forays through an artist's highly developed history.

Says Holland, "I feel that there is no escape, truly, from who you are as an artist: many of one's questions remain the same. What changes is the sophistication of the questions and, hopefully, their answers." His constants of atmospheric abstraction, collage and slight geometries are present, however the rigid practice of this series sets these works apart. The end result is an exhibition of paintings and works on paper that celebrates painting and the notion of painting within one's self.

Edward Holland was born in Philadelphia in 1980. He received a BFA in Painting from Syracuse University and his MA in Studio Art from New York University. His work has been shown at Peter Marcelle Project, Gerald Peters Gallery in New York and Santa Fe, NM: and Phyllis Weston Gallery in Cincinnati, OH. This is Edward Holland's fourth solo exhibition with Peter Marcelle. He lives and works in New York City.

my goodness, i cannot believe that i have not posted to the news section on the site since december. i am incredibly sorry about that. that is not to say that i do not have news, but that is a long time. what have i been doing? i have been busy at work on my latest series of paintings, which are posted under the "portraits" heading. i am unsure as to whether or not this will remain the title of the series but for right now, it will do. loosely worded, the series follows the narrative structure of james joyce's "portrait of the artist as a young man" in that each painting, through its layering and development, works through my history as an artist. i will, at some point, write something for this site explaining the series. but at the moment, i am still learning what the series is more latently about, so i will refrain at this time. regardless of all of this, thank you for your patience!
